AP (via Yahoo): Jury Orders Microsoft to Pay $520 Million
A jury awarded Chicago-based Eolas Technologies Inc. about half a billion dollars from Microsoft yesterday for damages stemming from infringement of a patent that specifies how a user might access interactive applications within web pages. The damages were derived by charging Microsoft $1.47 for every copy of Windows sold from late 1998 to September 2001. Microsoft counsel said the software giant would appeal.
The successfully defended invention is U.S. patent number 5,838,906. It was first filed for application in 1994 and granted in 1998.
