A Better Business Bureau study, reported by Internet Retailer, found that the vast majority of identity thefts happen via offline methods. The top five methods, all offline ones, included stolen wallets and checkbooks, corrupt employees and stolen mail, among others. The sixth most common form of identity fraud was the loss of information through spyware. Following that was information gleaned from garbage and then, seventh, phishing. One researcher noted, "Our numbers show that fears about online identity fraud may be out of proportion to the relative risk, causing consumers to ignore the most glaring issues." eMarketer collected some other relevant statistics to put the ID fraud issue into perspective.
