IAB: Privacy Guidelines for Interactive Advertising

This week the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) announced its interactive advertising guidelines.

Members are asked to follow the following five principles:

  1. That customers be provided "meaningful notice" about the information collected and used for interactive advertising.
  2. Customers should be informed of their choices regarding interactive advertising, and empowered to exercise those choices. (ex. Would you like to opt out?)
  3. Businesses must implement appropriate security practices and procedures for collected data.
  4. Businesses must be responsible and accountable to consumers.
  5. Companies must educate consumers about interactive advertising's benefits.

The Kelsey Group forecasts that interactive share of global ad spend will reach 21 percent by 2012. In 2007 it comprised 7.4 percent of global ad share, or $45 billion./p>
