Holiday Shoppers Take Mobile Barcode Scanning Mainstream

Mobile barcode scanning is becoming an increasingly common method for making purchases this holiday season, according to two recent surveys from mobile barcode solution provider Scanbuy.

57% of Consumers Have Scanned at Least 1 Barcode

A recent consumer poll conducted via Twitter and Facebook reveals that more than half of those surveyed have scanned a barcode this holiday season. This figure includes 57% scanning at least once and 40% of those consumers scanning a mobile barcode five or more times. An additional 40% stated they've never scanned a barcode before, but would like to.

Almost All Consumers Find Mobile Barcodes Useful

An overwhelming 97% of consumers found mobile barcodes useful in some capacity, with only 3% finding them "not very useful. In addition, price comparison was the most popular feature for consumers while shopping, with user reviews and specific product offers also getting strong interest.

Online Price Lookup Leading Barcode Purpose

More than half of consumers said they'd most likely scan a barcode to look up prices online, but some also like getting information without finding a sales clerk. More than 60% stated they are most likely to scan barcodes (UPC and QR) from product packaging

The iPhone was the device most used by respondents, with 34% of those surveyed saying that was the device they used. BlackBerry and Android were right behind at 29% and 27% each, respectively.

Holiday Season Starts with Barcode Bang

Previous Scanbuy data indicates that product purchases from its own barcode scanning app were up almost three times on Friday, Nov. 26 (Black Friday) and Saturday, November 27.  A higher percentage purchased on Saturday, November 28, which Scanbuy says shows  that people may have had more time to do so.

In terms of products scanned:

  • Books were most purchased category, followed by Electronics and Housewares.
  • Toys were the most scanned category, followed by Electronics and Books
  • The majority of products bought were in the $10-$30 range
