Hitwise Looks beyond the Biggest 2006 Searches

via Hitwise

Internet research firm Hitwise has dug a bit deeper into the top searches by online users in 2006 to provide a deeper understanding of web behavior.

In addition to the previously announced Top 10 searches, Hitwise has released two lists of search queries. The first strips out instances where someone is searching for a specific URL, such as www.myspace.com, which was the number-six search term on the initial list. Still, this list shows a lot of people searching for websites such as Craigslist or retailers like Target or Amazon.

The third list takes away all the brand names and just looks at generic searches. On this list, "lyrics" is at the top, along with phrases like "driving directions" and "baby names."

In addition to the lists of terms, Hitwise has provided some analysis of when the volume of those searches were highest. Searches for "free music downloads," for instance, spiked after Christmas, when people were looking for music for their new MP3 players.
