Half of YouTube's Audience Is Over 34

First they said MySpace was "aging," now researchers say the largest share of YouTube visitors consists of those over age 34.

Several internet research firms, including eMarketer, Neilsen/NetRatings, and Quantcast, have found that the 35-64 age group comprised the largest proportion (around 50 percent) of YouTube's audience, Ars Technica reports. This richer, older demo makes the site much more attractive to potential advertisers, which might help explain why Google shelled out $1.65 billion to buy it.

That news is troubling for TV execs. The 35-64 demo is the most prized for television networks, which derive most of their viewers from that age group. Most execs have assumed that the primary audience for YouTube was the under-35 age group.

The 35-64 demo is prized by advertisers because it holds most of the nation's wealth. comScore's data revealed that 61.6 percent of the 35-64 age group that visits YouTube makes more than $60,000 annually.
