Guidelines Developed for Mobile Websites

The Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) of 30 industry players, including some of the leading wireless and internet companies - such as Nokia, Vodafone and Google - have provisionally agreed on a set of website development guidelines for making it easier to surf the mobile web, reports Reuters.

The W3C guidelines advise developers against using large graphics and pop-ups; they also suggest designing sites so that the content appears right at the top of a cell phone screen. Cookie use is discouraged, because they don't work on cell phones; developers need to find alternatives for cookies, said Daniel Applequist, a Vodafone exec who chaired the guidelines group.
