Internet Retailer: Patent Office issues initial rejection of patent claims in PanIP suit
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) dealt a major setback to one of the gotcha patents that threatened the e-commerce world with licensing demands. The PTO found that one of the patents - dealing with online payment systems - had claims that it now rejects. A group of 15 e-tailers challenged two patents owned by PanIP. A lawyer for PanIP, which has 60 days to answer the rejection, said the firm would make appropriate responses.
