Google plans to add content to its searchable video index run apace, with 14 additional content streams added to the Google Video service. Google has been cagey about which cable channels are a part of the effort and won't release a comprehensive list. Reportedly, CNN and various Discovery Channel-related brands are on board.
Google uses closed captioning feeds to index the content, but it so far has been unable to secure the various licenses and releases necessary to provide video clips as part of search results. It, instead, includes screenshots of the content.
The search giant ultimately plans to offer video content producers a platform to which they can upload their content, let it be indexed and even sell episode access to consumers.
