Google is again taking political flak, this time for ostensibly taking an anti-conservative stance by not allowing a banner campaign promoting a book about "abuses of power" by former President Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton, DM News reports. The author and publisher of the book say the ads were pulled last week after having initially gained approval, but Google denied removing any approved ads.
The ad campaign began May 31, and the book publisher said it had been performing well until the campaign was halted by Google, which said the ads that were accepted are still running on Google's network, though others had been rejected - but not because of any political views they espoused. "These decisions are based on our policies, not political views," according to the Google spokesman.
Google has been targeted by both the left and the right of the political spectrum in the past, and it has pulled left-leaning ads as well. "Ad text advocating against any organization or person is not permitted. Stating disagreement with, or campaigning against, a candidate for public office, a political party or public administration is generally permissible," Google's policy states.
