Google's use of closed caption text on video feeds to index TV content should see first light later today, according to the AP. Google's feeds include content from ABC, PBS, Fox News and C-Span. Interestingly absent are CBS and NBC. With web-based content, search engines generally have not been seeking publisher permission to index materials, but with the video content both Google and Yahoo - which has its own video index - have first been striking explicit agreements with broadcasters. Search engines probably don't legally need to get networks' permissions to create an index, but to subsequently serve up the video content, they almost certainly do.
