Google Buys JotSpot Collaborative Tech Firm

Google has acquired wiki technology firm JotSpot as part of its efforts to extend collaboration into its web-based applications.

Google's acquisition of wiki developer JotSpot comes as Google is building collaborative capabilities into its web-based applications, including the recently launched Google Docs & Spreadsheets, Red Herring writes. At the same time, JotSpot has been upgrading its wiki technology to allow users to collaborate more easily on spreadsheets, documents, calendars, photo galleries, and file repositories.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. JotSpot CEO Joe Kraus would not comment on future product direction, but said he had been talking with Google over the previous 6-9 months.

"Wikis are going to be a standard part of anyone's toolbox so it's smart for Google to get on the wiki bandwagon with the JotSpot acquisition," Jonathan Spira, chief analyst at IT research firm Basex is quoted as saying.
