Google AdSense Ads Are Everywhere

I just spotted Google AdSense ads on all over ABC.com's site. Along with leaderboards, AdSense ads are virtually the only ads I see on that site — they've bumped out skyscrapers for positioning. This is a major TV network we're talking about. Seems to me I notice AdSense ads all over the place these days. Do they actually make that much money for publishers? I'd love to know what other surprising places you're seeing them in these days.

When they first came out (only a few weeks ago), I assumed they'd be relegated to second- and third-tier sites, but they're showing up on major media properties almost over night, at the exclusion of other significant ad formats. Is this really a revolution in online advertising taking place so suddenly, or am I over reacting? One distinct advantage I can see to them over display ads, aside from their presumably superior (?) click-through rates: they sell themselves. If indeed the generate significant revenue for publishers, and they don't require the expense of an ad sales team, we could be talking about a revolution indeed.
