As it continues to buildup an enterprise-ready version of its Apps for Your Domain suite of online software, Google has announced that Docs and Spreadsheets will soon be integrated into that offering, reports PC World.
Until now Google Apps for Your Domain had included Gmail email service, Google Talk instant messaging and calling, collaborative calendaring and web page design and publishing via Google Page Creator. The addition of word processing and spreadsheet software would make the product an even more direct competitor against Microsoft's ubiquitous Office suite.
More companies are looking to offload PC-based software such as Office in favor of hosted applications, even though they often don't offer the same variety of functions or depth. Microsoft has been working on its own hosted software offering, dubbed Microsoft Office Live.
Google Apps for Your Domain with Docs and Spreadsheets could debut as early as next week, but will definitely appear sometime this quarter. The suite of hosted software is free, but Google is working on an enhanced version that would be available for a small fee.
