Google Takes on Music Search in China

Hoping to trump Baidu's competitive advantage in China, Google plans to launch its own music search site.

google.cn/music is currently only available to Chinese users. And unlike Baidu, which points users to a number of illegal music downloading resources, it will only point users to free or legal-to-distribute tracks. The ad-supported service has already formed a publishing relationship with top100.cn, a Chinese music site backed by basketball player Yao Ming, reports Ars Technica.

In the entire Asia-Pacific region, Baidu is the third-used search engine behind Google (Yahoo is second), but it still wallops the insufferable search giant in China.

Google's previous attempts to beat Baidu in China have included giving free music downloads away.
