Google Reader Makes Killer App, Targets Digg on Facebook

Facebook app slapped together

In an era of open-source apps, great new tools are often just waiting to be discovered. Sometimes, they just need to be added to the right social network.

That happened to Google Reader, Google's long-time RSS feed reader that Mexico-based programmer Mario Romero added to Facebook, with one unique twist - it allows Facebookers to share feeds, which makes it perform suspiciously like Facebook's Digg application, reports Scobleizer.

When users add Google Reader to their Facebook profile, then add the link to their personal Google Reader shared page, users are rewarded with a page displaying top links among them and their Facebook friends.

If everyone in Facebook were to add Google Reader to their Facebook profiles, the social network would, in effect, have its own personal Digg.
But Google Reader has another perk Digg lacks, according to Scobleizer.

"There’s a lot of smart people using Google Reader — Eric Auchard at Reuters is on the list, for instance. That’ll lead to a lot better news than Digg picks on an average day."
