Lacking Partners, Google to Bid $4.6BN on Wireless Spectrum

Coming soon?

Google will be front and center at the wireless spectrum auction facilitated by the FCC this January, according to the Wall Street Journal.

All on its lonesome, the company is preparing to bid some $4.6 billion.

Google is currently testing its advanced wireless network in Mountain View, which will rely on its just-announced Android software suite. Such experience, according to a source, will come in handy if the search giant decides to run a full-scale national mobile carrier.

Google revealed similarly grand plans for the online social networking space with its announcement of OpenSocial, a standard programming interface for building apps across participating social networks — that is, with the exception of Facebook.
