Google May Resuscitate 'My Stuff'

Google may consider reviving My Stuff, an application that organizes online files into one interface, writes TechCrunch.

Cloud storage, or the storing of data online vs. on a personal hard drive, has become more popular as more people use laptops and devices get smaller, leaving little room for extra storage (think MacBook Air).

A few years ago Google developed a product called My Stuff, a user-facing dashboard that organizes users' important files, distributed across the web.

The project got sidetracked and the company moved on to other things, probably because Google didn't want to promote the use of third-party services over its own. (Google has its own services for photos, videos, and office documents.)

But as more files are stored and shared online - Flickr for photos, YouTube for videos, Zoho and Slideshare for office docs – My Stuff may be dusted off and taken off the shelf. Or, as some say, it may evolve into something more interesting.

Google's My Stuff would aggregate the photos, videos and office documents that used to live on the computer desktop, using available APIs for the various third-party services, but mixed into one web-based user interface.

My Stuff could also be merged with Google's long-awaited cloud storage service, GDrive. The GDrive concept, first speculated on in March '06, allows those willing to have their information scanned by Google to use the service as a virtual external hard drive for storage and retrieval.

Still, considering that GDrive and cloud storage is slightly less interesting now, My Stuff might just be launched on its own merit, allowing Google to grow as a web infrastructure player.
