Google Mapplets Marry Ads to Earth

Pop-ups: tomorrow's Encyclopedias

Google's upcoming Mapplets integrates advertisements into its Maps feature with the inclusion of AdSense functionality, reports InfoWorld.

Using the Gadgets and Maps APIs, Mapplets will enable users to build applications and content from within Google Maps.

Paid-for locations can be marked with customizable icons, which display pop-ups that include sponsored information and a link. Advertisers receive a share of revenue per click, as they do with AdSense.

Visiting users may limit the sponsored content that appears on their Maps interface and will also be able to turn the feature off.

Google's Mapplets was revealed in a sneak preview on Thursday in London for Software Developer Day.
