Gmail, Google's web-based email product available for use only by invitation from those already using it, is now available to everyone, reports ZDNet (U.K.).

The service provides users with an email address and 2.8 GB of email storage. Known as Google Mail in the U.K. because Google's attempts to secure the rights to the Gmail name there have failed, Gmail will now also be available to U.K. users via their mobile phones, Google said.

The application runs on any Java-based phone with data services and synchronizes Google Mail on the phone with the user's web-based account; email attachments such as photos and PDF and text documents can also be viewed with mobile devices.

In the U.K., the Gmail trademark belongs to Independent International Investment Research, which registered it after Google's launch of Gmail.
