Google, eBay Vie For Online Payment Dominance

Riding a wave of customer satisfaction, eBay beats Google when it comes to online payment offerings - right now, anyway, reports The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

eBay's PayPal ranks highly in terms of user satisfaction, while one in five say they're happy with Google's Checkout payment product. PayPal is also playing an increasingly important role in eBay's business, as auction revenue has slowed in the recent past.

Right now PayPal generates about one quarter of eBay's revenue.

eBay does not allow sellers to use Google Checkout, referring to it as an unproven product. eBay chief Meg Whitman, though, said they may open the doors to Google Checkout if user satisfaction increases.

Google is also taking the fight to eBay when it comes to internet telephony. Last week it acquired GrandCentral, which allows people to consolidate phone numbers to one central number accessible anywhere, including online. eBay bought the popular Skype VoiP service last year.

Despite leading in several niche markets, Google still blows eBay out of the water in many areas, including revenue.

Google launched its Checkout service in mid-2006.
