Google has put together its MyMaps and Mapplets features to bestow Google Maps users with the ability to build custom maps with dynamic data, Wired reports.
Google's expansive library of user-generated mash-ups can now be plotted on a custom map. Data can also be layered to build new combinations and add depth to a given idea.
Over four million custom maps have been generated with MyMaps since its April launch. Mapplets, which itself is a mash-up of the Google Gadgets API and Google Maps API, was released in May.
With the new functionality, Google hopes to increase use of Maps, which currently ranks third in the category behind products from AOL and Yahoo. Increased usage, the company hopes, will lead to stronger ad revenue generated by the Maps service.
Data manipulators-to-be can visit Google Maps to try the new feature. Click on MyMaps, then "Add Content" to begin building layers.
