YouTube Dollars Not a Priority for Producers

Happyslip's Christine

While they welcome the revenue sharing plan put in place by YouTube, some content creators still see the site as a primarily promotional outlet, reports BusinessWeek.

YouTube remains a means to an end for creators of shows like HappySlip. That end is building up their own brands and, hopefully, pushing people to their own sites.

At those sites some offer DVDs and other items for sale, which can generate significant income in comparison to the few dollars video-sharing sites may allot them.

Some creators even worry that having videos on YouTube may be detrimental to other income since people may just visit there and not come over to the personal site. But these sites often have trouble signing major advertisers because of their smaller traffic numbers.
