MyWaves, a mobile video app
Getjar is a small mobile portal that has emerged as a testing ground for mobile applications.
The portal enables developers to test mobile apps on thousands of volunteers that give feedback for improvement, reports GigaOM.
Hundreds of apps are available for free on the site.
Getjar makes money by selling premium spots for downloads. It is also building a platform for porting ads into the apps, coupled with a micropayments system.
The site gets 150,000 unique daily visitors across its web and WAP sites, 300,000 daily software downloads, and recently hit its 100 millionth download since launching in '05.
However, the community shows that mobile software development requires thousands of tweaks for the many different phones, different OS versions — even different operator networks, upping the cost and ultimately hurting margins.
