GE Money Customer Data Misplaced; Company Compensates with Free Credit Monitoring

Oops.

GE Money is looking for a lost tape containing the information of 650,000 customers. It went missing October 2007 from a vault owned by data storage company Iron Mountain.

The tape contains names, addresses and account numbers of customers at 230 GE Money retail partners, reports DM News. It also contains 150,000 Social Security numbers.

GE Money is "optimistic the tape will show up." It is offering 12 months of free credit monitoring to the 150,000 consumers whose Social Security numbers went missing.
