Five in Seven Japanese Prefer Wii to PS3

KO

Last month the Nintendo Wii outperformed Sony's PlayStation 3 in sales in Japan by six to one, according to the BBC, via independent research.

Nintendo pushed approximately 2.76 million Wii consoles in Japan since its December launch, dusting Sony, which sold a grand total of 970,270 PS3s from its November debut.

PlayStation's Phil Harrison, head of worldwide studios, admonished, "You only have to go back to the games that launched PlayStation 1 and Playstation 2. If you took those few dozen titles and analysed them, you would never have imagined that either of those formats would have on to sell over 100 million units each."

Many of the franchises that launched games of immense popularity on PlayStation have yet to appear in iterations for PlayStation 3. These include Metal Gear Solid, Killzone 2 and Gran Turismo.

Sony has struggled to replicate past success. It also suffers from a dearth of "killer" exclusive titles that actually demonstrate the console's potential.
