BizReport: Finns Rush to Register Internet Domains

Within six minutes of opening, the Finland government communications office had received 4,000 requests for new .fi domain registrations following a relaxation in .fi registration rules.

The new regulations open up the .fi extension to nearly anyone within Finland who can meet the "decency" requirement, a major relaxation of previous rules limiting .fi domain names to company names and trademarks.

The office received 17,000 new requests for within hours of the regulation changes, a major jump considering there were only about 40,000 .fi domains registered under the old rules.
