FTTP (fiber to the premises), providing bandwidth above 3 Mbps (twice T1 speeds) is projected to eventually replace traditional copper-wire connections and unleash a wide range of advanced communication services, writes eMarketer, citing In-Stat estimates. Early last year, the Yankee Group reported on the first signs of FTTP penetrating the wider market. A new report from In-Stat estimates that in the U.S. FTTP will grow rapidly, from 1.9 million in 2004 to 11.8 million in 2009 - still only a small proportion of some 110 million households. Though common for long-distance and inter-city telecommunications, fiber optics technology is only beginning to be used to directly connect homes and businesses. A key FTTP growth driver is expected to be video.
