FEC Lawyers Drafted Blog Regulation Regime, Nixed at Last Minute

CNET reports that a version of the Federal Election Commission's proposal on how to treat blogs relative to political campaign regulation would have lumped blog postings in with cash contributions: as behavior to be disclosed, monitored and limited in regard to elections. The version, produced by the FEC's general counsel's office and dated March 10, was the sort of policy two Republican commissioners had been publicly testing out in speeches and interviews. Rapid and voluminous negative feedback - from all over the political spectrum - seems to have forced that version back into the closet. Some commentators had previously criticized bloggers for reacting loudly to the prospect, saying that the blog community had been misinterpreting or misunderstanding the Republican commissioners' comments.
