FCC Launches Media Ownership Proceedings

The Federal Communications Commission has launched proceedings (.doc), which could last a year, on easing ownership restrictions on newspapers, radio and TV stations, writes Reuters. If rules are eased, the result could lead to consolidation - and some say media monopolization.

The FCC will review various rules limiting the numbers and combinations of media that can be owned in the same market and across other markets - for example, whether a company may own a newspaper and a TV or radio station in the same market.

Big media companies argue there is plenty of market competition, and consolidation could cut costs and expand service. Consumer advocates fear it would reduce local content and reduce independent voices.
