If FCC chief Kevin Martin has his way, wireless customers will be able to choose freely from devices and software without the limitations imposed by options their carriers provide, reports USA Today.
Martin made his preferences for consumer choice as his agency prepares to auction high-strength portions of the broadcast spectrum. The free space will be made available to wireless operators as TV stations, the longtime dominating forces in this medium, switch over to digital broadcasting.
The spectrum is highly coveted by wireless companies for its power to go through walls and other barriers.
Even if Martin's proposals go into effect, they will only apply to services using the newly available spectrum. Older networks would still be beholden to the "locked" mentality that permeates the wireless industry, where choice is limited by what the carrier offers. Martin feels the current standard operating procedure hampers innovation, as carriers seek to protect their corner of marketshare and revenue.
Though existing operations would not be directly effected by the proposed rules, pressure from consumers are expected to eventually guide a slackening of restrictions.
