Facebook Vanity URLs Go Live on Friday Night

They're he-ere

Beginning at 12:01AM EDT on Saturday, June 13, Facebook's vanity URLs feature goes live.

Vanity URLs enable users to personalize their Facebook link, making it easier to distribute to others and self-promote.

It is also better for search engine optimization purposes: When a person searches your name on Google, it's likely your vanity URL-infused Facebook page will be among the top results.

They will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Facebook will suggest URLs based on a user's registered name, but those inclined can also select their own:

Users will only be permitted to select one username for their profiles, as well as for any Pages they administer. The name must total at least five characters and can only include alphanumeric characters, a period or full stop. Non-Romanized characters are not currently supported.

"Think carefully about the username you choose," Facebook cautioned. "Once it's been selected, you won't be able to change or transfer it. If you signed up for a Facebook Page after May 31 or a user profile after today at 3 p.m. EDT, you may not be able to sign up for a username immediately because of steps we've taken to prevent abuse or 'squatting' on names."

Vanity URLs are free to users. Companies with trademarked or otherwise protected names have been asked to contact the Facebook team in order to avoid transitional issues.

In terms of time spent, Facebook tops the most popular 10 social networks for April, according to data from Nielsen Online. The company boasts about 300 million active users; about half log in daily and spend an average of 20 minutes on the site each, according to Facebook's Blake Chandlee, the socnet's Director of EMEA.

Earlier this month, Facebook launched Ads for 'Pages' and 'Events'.
