Internet Retailer writes that the majority of U.S. web merchants are only in compliance with roughly 30 percent of joint standards for consumer data storage protection, as the June 30 implementation deadline set by MasterCard and Visa fast approaches, according to David Glaser, director of professional services at CyberSource. The combined standards - the Payment Card Industry, or PCI, Data Security Standard - outline the steps that online merchants must take to protect confidential customer data, including credit card info. Online retailers that fail to implement PCI could face up to a $500,000 fine or may be permanently barred from accepting MasterCard and Visa. However, both bankcard associations said they would show leniency if web merchants are making a good-faith effort.
