Will a standard boost mobile
TV viewers in Europe?
The European Commission has made a move to simplify mobile phone TV by adopting a standard backed by Nokia.
The Commission said making the Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld (DVB-H) the preferred standard in Europe will give mobile TV a boost, according to Reuters. It is already the most widely used in Europe, which isn't to say it lacks detractors. Britain, Germany and the Netherlands are opposed to making DVB-H the sole model for the bloc.
DVB-H is the only standard with a global presence, though South Korea, Japan, the US and China have backed local rivals. The US backs a model developed by Qualcomm.
Nonetheless, countries in the EU will now be required to encourage the use of DVB-H.
