Email Volume Affects Read and Click Rates, List Size Matters

Just-released data from a quarterly eROI study of emails sent, read and clicked on show that in 3Q05, in the aggregate, midweek was the low point for the number of emails read and clicked on - and the high point for the number of emails sent. The highest numbers of reads and clicks were on Sunday and Friday - which were among the lowest days for emails sent. For this quarter too, then, email volume is inversely related to read and click rates, with the exception of Saturday.

Noting that the aggregated stats sometime vary significantly from those for lists of various sizes, eROI in the third quarter took a look at day-of-the-week stats by list size.

It broke down lists into nine size categories, ranging from fewer than 500 to more than 200,000.

As might be expected, the larger the list, the less the rates of emails read and clicked on: the management of larger lists requires greater levels of maintenance, and individual accuracy becomes more difficult; smaller lists are more easily maintained and therefore more accurate.

The eROI report (pdf) charts the email send, read, and click data for each list-size category.
