Email Tracking System Catches "Legit" Marketing Campaigns

MediaPost: Email Marketing Tracker Detects Campaign Strategies, Uncovers Porn

Emerging Interest, a company developing an email marketing competitive data service, has found that "legitimate" email compaigns will often devolve into in-box busting spam sources, and rather quickly. The email tracking system, which involves creating a unique address for each list sign-up, is able to determine which spam arrives from which original information source. Through this method, Emerging Interest discovered, for instance, that it took only one month for a new email address signed up to an American Giveaways list to start receiving pornographic spam. It as yet remains unclear whether the email list leaking is perpetrated by the original brand or a service provider somewhere else along the email marketing process.
