A mosaic of delights
Insiders say eBay is planning to sell StumbleUpon, a Firefox add-on that recommends sites based on user input, reports TechCrunch.
The online auction house acquired StumbleUpon last year for about $75 million.
Deutsche Bank has been hired to locate a buyer. And while the pricetag was kept mum, it's doubtful eBay will be able to break even on the acquisition. In July 2007 StumbleUpon served 4.4 million visitors and 31 million page views; in July 2008, that number had decreased to 1.3 million visitors and 25 million page views, according to comScore.
Registrations, however, have risen. StumbleUpon subscribers numbered 6,003,763 yesterday, a 20 percent rise from April 2008.
Earlier this week, Barrons reported eBay plans to lay off about 10 percent of its workforce. The company suffered a panoply of public blows over the past year.
