eBay on Constant Alert Against Fraudsters

Romania: fraudster hideout

As of early 2007, about 47 percent of all phishing attacks were being launched at either eBay or eBay-owned PayPal.Last summer, eBay foiled a criminal ring based in Romania that contacted losing bidders and offered a "second chance" purchase. Ars Technica called it a small victory in a big war.

Though eBay recently enlisted Russia, China and Romania to help fight cybercrime, it is nonetheless constantly working to thwart it.

At the Visa Security conference last week, Meg Whitman discussed how she is working with Microsoft to develop a blacklist of phishing sites that will be placed in IE7's phishing filter.

EBay signs emails with domain key signing and is preparing to launch a PayPal key fob that requires an authentication code and password to access an account.
