eBay Expands Operations to Extend Reach

eBay continues to make business moves that indicate it's breaking away from just an auction house, reports BusinessWeek.

The company is about to announce its plans to become a major presence on the Internet and move beyond its main website. These moves are part of a realization that what's made sites like YouTube so successful is the ability for people to put site content on their own blogs or sites.

The auction company is expected to make clear at a conference of web developers, sellers and others just how services like Skype, PayPal, StubHub and other acquired services will fit together for the future of eBay.

One move that's already been announced is the release of San Dimas, desktop software that can be used by buyers and sellers to manage the auctions they're running or monitoring. It's also working on creating more storefronts for sellers and e-commerce vendors that aren't housed on eBay.com. Some software still in testing mode will eventually put auction information on sites via embedded widget.
