eBay Airs Dirty Legal Nappies: craigslist Suit Goes Public

politics with a sickle

eBay has released full details of its lawsuit against craigslist, an online classifieds site in which it owns a 28.4 percent stake.

The suit was filed in April.

According to the document, eBay "seeks equitable and legal relief against [craigslist executives] Newmark and Buckmaster, for breaching their fiduciary duties of care, loyalty and good faith by implementing certain self-dealing transactions […] designed specifically to benefit themselves to the detriment of eBay, the third and only other stockholder in the Company."

craigslist called the suit unethical and unfounded.

The filing explores events leading up to its conception, including craigslist's attempt to repurchase eBay's shares following eBay's launch of Kijiji, a free classifieds site that craigslist considers a market rival.

On the public release of eBay's lawsuit, craigslist wrote, "Sadly, we have an uncomfortably conflicted shareholder in our midst, one that is obsessed with dominating online classifieds for the purpose of maximizing its own profits." It will file a formal response in the next few weeks.

eBay recently suffered mutiny after hiking up its seller fees, one component of its much-toted corporate restructuring.
