DVD Sales Catch Network Execs' Attention

iMedia: Jaffe Juice: Too Big to Ignore

The family guy

While Nielsen struggles to substantiate its dying business model, Joe Jaffe calls to our attention how DVD sales and the Internet can be a powerful metric of success. Fox's "The Family Guy" was cancelled over a year ago yet DVD sales of its first season reached a million copies.

Jaffe respectfully jabs Fox's Sandy Grushow as being clueless and placing a ridiculous spin on the cancellation of the show saying it "aired before its time." Rather than recognizing the powerful hard cash DVD sales or the 11,377 people who signed a petition on a fan site to save another Fox show, "John Doe." Fox (and other networks) continue to rely on the squishiness of Nielsen ratings when they should be turning to other, more concrete forms of measurement.
