Radio station company Infinity plans to stream its radio stations directly to the internet and sell advertising on those feeds as a separate offering to its customers. One problem facing radio stations has been a strange legal regime in which music that they can play for free on the radio requires royalty payments when played on the internet. But increased pressure from satellite offerings and a generally stagnant radio ad market have forced Infinity to branch out. Interestingly, rather than try to sell the additional reach to their current advertisers, the company said it intends to sell the online component as a separate media product, possibly anticipating radio buyer resistance to incorporating internet traffic in radio figures. Infinity already has its all-news WCBS station online as of December, and it plans to add another 11 stations in major markets to its web offerings.
