Imagine the possibilities
With the tagline, "You dream it. ASUS Builds It. Intel inside it," a site launched yesterday purports to produce the world's first community-designed PC.
The idea is to gather the "collective intelligence" of PC users around the globe to custom-build a PC that will satisfy every user, writes John Battelle.
Visitors to WePC.com submit what they think are necessary components of the perfect machine. Other users vote for the merits of each with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Community members can also grok over particularly compelling ideas.
The community is divided into three conversation groups, addressing the most popular consumer PC categories: netbooks, notebooks, and gaming notebooks.
Prizes are rewarded to some participants "for their creative role in the project," but neither prizes nor criteria have been formalized.
Since the computer will be manufactured by ASUS and powered by Intel processors (Intel® Atom™, Intel® Centrino® 2 and Intel® Centrino® 2 Extreme), the "dream PC" is somewhat limited by the technology available to these two companies.
