Crowd-Sourced Magazines are Fair Game for Article Sponsorship

Where amateur photographers
become stars

8020 Publishing — which recently made Conde Nast VP Mitch Fox its President and CEO — puts a democratic twist on an old business. Its travel and photography titles consist entirely of content submitted online and voted into the current issue by readers.

Because 8020's "participant publications" are created by crowds, they aren't subject to the rules of the American Society of Magazine Editors, such as maintaining the division between editorial and advertising. This means 8020 can allow marketers to sponsor editorial sections, reports Advertising Age.

JPG's 16th print issue will include a themed section called "On the Go" sponsored by Pentax Cameras, and the third issue of Everywhere magazine includes "Jetset Weekend," sponsored by Expedia.

Samsung also used both JPG's site, jpgmag.com, and print edition to advertise a cellphone with a high-end camera.
