IAR: Copyright Office Sets Webcasting Rates
The recording industry and the U.S. government, along with the complicity of several large online portals who have since moved away from online broadcasting business models, have come to an agreement that charges web music broadcasters fees for every song played to every user, or a percentage of subscription revenues.
The measure, now having reached final approval by the U.S. Copyright Office, rings in the end of the budding diversity of web radio stations, as the online stations are forced to pay for music that offline radio stations are allowed to broadcast free of charge.
