Connecticut Wants MySpace to Add Age Verification

Connecticut lawmakers have introduced a bill that would require MySpace and similar social-networking sites to verify the ages of its members.

The bill, introduced Wednesday, came a day after a man was sentenced to 14 years in prison for setting up a sexual encounter with an 11-year-old girl via MySpace, Newsday reports. It was one of the first federal sex cases involving the popular networking site.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who joined other lawmakers in introducing the age-verification bill, says 10-20 other states are considering similar legislation. "The technology is available. The solution is financially feasible, practically doable," he said. "If we can put a man on the moon, we can check ages of people on these websites."

The bill proposes that any networking site that fails to verify ages or obtain parental permission to post profiles of users under 18 would face civil fines up to $5,000 per violation.

Sites would also be required to confirm that information about parents is correct, if necessary by directly contacting parents.
