Reacting to comments from Republican members of the Federal Elections Commission that seemed designed to inveigh the threat of regulation among generally liberal bloggers, some in Congress are proposing legislation that would strip the Commission of its ability to do so. News.com reports that Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) introduced a bill that would overturn a federal judge's recent ruling that the internet may fall under the purview of recent campaign finance laws. The law simply makes explicit that the internet would be exempt from the McCain-Feingold Act. During last year's presidential election, much noise was made of campaigns potentially abusing this loophole to dump unregulated ad dollars on the Internet, but the ritual over-reliance on spot market television advertising prevented this from happening.
