Comcast Drops Microsoft Software From Cable Boxes

Comcast has announced plans to stop using Microsoft technology to power its on-screen program guide, reports the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

In its place, Comcast will roll out the GuideWorks software and program guide throughout the country. The software will be automatically swapped out beginning in June and running through September. User settings and schedules should not be affected by the change.

Right now the software is only being used in boxes in Microsoft's home state of Washington, the same state it debuted in three years ago. The software company expected the switch for some time so the announcement was not a surprise. Microsoft will work with GuideWorks to ensure a seamless transition for the end user.

GuideWorks is a joint venture of Comcast and Gemstar-TV Guide International.
