CNET has bought hip parenting site UrbanBaby; financial terms weren't released. CNET also plans to revamp several lifestyle properties it had previously acquired.
CNET will expand UrbanBaby's coverage to additional markets and focus on its popular community aspects, writes ClickZ, quoting CNET corporate VP Martin Green: "We will definitely be working on redoing the community message board software and expanding the newsletter, which is predominantly New York, into other U.S. cities." CNET wants to attract endemic advertisers as well as financial, CPG and auto manufacturers who want to reach upscale urban moms with young children.
CNET also plans to merge, then re-launch two properties it previously acquired: food connoisseur magazine Chow and similarly named community site Chowhound.com. CNET expects to have a six-month charter sponsor program at launch; advertisers are expected to be from the CPG, alcoholic beverages, food-related appliance, auto and financial services categories.
Webshots, which CNET bought in 2004, will be redesigned completely by September and will, as an open-sharing platform, offer the ability to share photos, and eventually videos, with personal sites and blogs.
