The Christian Science Monitor may be considering publishing online only and scrapping the print version of what was once one of America's most prestigious dailies, according to hints in a Boston Globe article (via paidcontent) - including the spiritual-sounding quote, "we are becoming less matter-based." Management is attempting to boost the paper's profile by attracting traffic to its website, csmonitor.com, since its low circulation (59,000) and dispersed nationwide readership make physical newspaper distribution difficult. The site, which practices "the paper's distinctive brand of nonhysterical journalism," receives 1.8 million unique visitors a month - not bad for its size (the New York Times gets about 10 million, the Boston Globe 3.2 million). Moreover, its RSS effort is apparently booming.
